Phones and laptops have no sub driver. If your 808 only exists below 60 Hz, most of your audience hears nothing at all.
When the kick and the 808 land together they sum into one loud moment. Arrangement, envelope and sidechain solve it three different ways.
Ducking is a level decision made in time. It changes how loud the 808 is while the kick is playing and nothing else about it, which makes it a different problem from which note the 808 is on. When both elements land on the same beat their waveforms add, and the sum is louder than either one and less clear than both. Three tools solve that: the arrangement, an envelope, and a compressor. They produce three different results, and picking by habit is why so much low end ends up pumping.
Low frequency waves are long, so a kick and an 808 sharing a beat stay close to correlated for the first few cycles. Correlated signals add by amplitude rather than by power, which means the peak of the sum approaches the sum of the peaks while the perceived loudness rises much less. You get a large transient that costs headroom and a moment of body that reads as one thick undifferentiated thing. The meter moves a lot. The music does not.
Average level tells a different story. RMS across a bar barely changes when two elements overlap for a fraction of a beat, which is why a mix can measure fine and still hit the limiter on every kick. What you hear as mud is the overlap; what the limiter reacts to is the peak. Ducking addresses both at once, and that is why it gets reached for first. Whether the note reaches a small speaker at all is a separate question, settled before any of this.
The cheapest duck is the one you never apply. Start the 808 a few milliseconds after the kick, or shorten the kick so its body has finished before the 808 body arrives. Nothing is compressed, no gain moves, and the two never share a cycle. It is also the window a glide has to stay clear of, so the edit pays twice.
An envelope shaper draws a gain curve and replays it on the grid. It is program independent: a loud kick and a quiet kick produce identical gain reduction, because the shape is not derived from the signal at all. That predictability is the point. Every bar ducks the same way, so the groove holds across a section no matter what the kick pattern is doing underneath it.
A sidechain compressor derives its gain from the detector, so a harder kick ducks harder. That helps when the kick varies and you want the bass to react, and it works against you when you need the same result twice. Filter the detector so it responds to the kick body rather than the click, or the duck fires on a transient that is already over.
A beat lasts sixty seconds divided by the tempo, so a fixed release in milliseconds covers a different share of the bar at every BPM. Set it so the 808 is back at full level before the next musically exposed moment, not merely before the next kick. This one control decides whether the movement reads as breathing or as pumping.
A pump is gain recovery you can hear. Compression stays invisible when the recovery finishes inside a window where nothing is exposed, and becomes obvious when it finishes in the open. Attack decides how much of the kick transient survives. Release decides whether the return to level lands on the offbeat, where the ear is already listening. The amount of reduction has almost nothing to do with it: a deep fast duck can be inaudible and a shallow slow one can pump.
The detector is the other half. A compressor keyed from a full range kick stays over threshold for as long as that kick has energy anywhere, including a long low tail you never hear as an attack. The duck then starts on time and ends late. Envelope shapers avoid this because they never listen. An engine that ties the 808 to the kick removes the routing question, though not the choice of which of the three tools you actually want.

PLUNGE ties the 808 to your kick inside the engine, so the space between them is part of the patch rather than a plugin added afterwards.
