A glide is one note changing pitch, not two notes meeting. Most of the mud comes from the old note still ringing under the new one.
The move you are after is a single 808 bending from one note to the next. What most sessions actually produce is two of them overlapping for a moment, each with its own attack and its own tail, and the ear reads that overlap as mud rather than as movement. Almost every smear problem is this one confusion.
Sub frequencies are long waves, and two of them a few semitones apart do not blend. They beat against each other, and that far down the beating is felt as a wobble in the level rather than heard as two notes. During a badly built glide that is exactly what is happening: the previous note has not finished, the new one has started, and for a fraction of a beat the track has two fundamentals.
The second source is the tail. An 808 with a long release keeps ringing after its note ends, so even a correctly triggered glide arrives on top of the note it just left. Shortening that release does more for clarity than any amount of equalisation, because the problem is not a frequency, it is a second note. Getting the note heard at all is a separate job, and it comes first.
Most instruments only glide when the next note begins before the previous one ends. A gap of a single tick retriggers instead of bending, and you get two separate hits with a portamento setting that appears to do nothing at all. Draw the notes so they touch, then extend the second one backwards until they genuinely overlap.
Glide time is the length of the journey, and for most of that journey the note is neither of the two pitches you wrote. A slide that takes a full beat spends the beat out of tune with everything you tuned it against. Short enough to be heard as a bend, short enough that the destination still has time to be a note.
The click at the front of an 808 is what makes it read as a hit, and it belongs to the first note only. If the glide retriggers it you get a second transient in the middle of the bend, which is heard as a mistake even by listeners who could not name it. Layer the attack as its own short sample and let the sub underneath do the moving.
Set the release so the note is gone by the time the next one starts, then listen to the glide again. A large share of what sounded like a smear turns out to be the previous note, and it disappears without the tone being touched at all.
A bend from one note to another sweeps through everything between them, including whatever your room, your speakers and your limiter dislike most. A slide that sounds clean on headphones and muddy in the room is often passing through a resonance that only the room has, and the fix is to move the notes rather than the glide.
It also crosses whatever fixed frequency the rest of your low end is organised around. If the sub is filtered or ducked at a set point, a gliding note crosses that line mid-bend and the level steps in the middle of the move. Audition the slide against the kick that will play under it, not on its own.
