Note length is a harmonic decision before it is a mixing one. An 808 still ringing under the next chord is a bass note inside that chord.
How long an 808 rings is a question about harmony before it is a question about mixing. The lowest note sounding is the note the ear uses to identify the chord above it, so an 808 that is still going when the next chord arrives has joined that chord whether you meant it to or not. This is about one note ending: when it stops, why it has to, and what the tail is doing for as long as it lasts. Where two notes meet is a different question with a different answer.
Bass defines harmony from underneath. Play the same three notes over an F and over an A and you get two different chords, because the ear takes the root from the lowest pitch rather than from the loudest thing in the mix. An 808 that rings past its bar applies that rule to a chord it was not written for. It turns the new chord into an inversion, or into something with no comfortable name, and that reads as the track sagging rather than as a wrong note.
Close intervals are worse down there than they are anywhere else. Two notes a step or two apart in the middle of the keyboard read as tension, because the ear resolves them as separate pitches. The same interval in the sub range falls inside a single critical band, so it roughens instead: you hear a wobble in the level rather than a chord. That is why a tail overlapping the next note sounds broken rather than dissonant, and why the fix is length rather than tuning.
Write the note the length you want it to sound, then set the release to match. Doing it the other way round means the release is deciding your harmony for you, and it will decide differently in every section. The MIDI length is a musical statement; the release is how that statement stops, and in a sub you synthesised it stops the same way every time.
A release in milliseconds is a fixed duration, and a bar is not. Slow the tempo down and the same setting now covers a smaller share of the bar; speed it up and the same tail runs into the next note. Think about the decay as a fraction of a beat, then convert, and it survives the tempo change you make in week two.
Soloed, almost any tail sounds good, because there is nothing for it to be wrong against. Loop across the bar line where the harmony changes and listen to the moment of overlap only. That single transition tells you more about the correct length than the whole loop played through.
If the tail is the only element sustaining through the second half of the bar, cutting it leaves a hole that no processing repairs. Add the element first, then shorten. The arrangement decides how much room the bass is allowed to give up, and the note has to stay audible on a small speaker whichever length you settle on.
A release is a fade, so the note is still present the whole way down. Setting a fast release does not remove the overlap, it makes the overlap quieter, and a quiet sub note still defines the root because pitch perception follows the lowest content rather than the loudest. That is the trap in mixing a tail by level: it stops bothering you before it stops affecting the harmony.
Silence is a different tool. A gate or a hard edit ends the note rather than fading it, which solves the harmonic problem completely and introduces a click if the waveform is not at zero when you cut. Neither answer is correct in general. Fade where the next event is close and you want continuity, cut where the bar has to change cleanly, and keep the tail out of the following note either way.
