Free 808 Plugins In 2026, And Which Ones Still Are

Five free 808 plugins measured from each maker's own page: what each one is, where it runs, and which of the usual picks quietly stopped being free.

Yes, And Fewer Than The Lists Say

Free 808 plugins exist and several install and run on a current machine. The harder question is which of the ones you keep reading about are still free, and that one is easy to check. On the page ranking first for this search, the top pick's current version needs a paid licence and the free download is a build from February 2021. Below is each free option measured from its own product page in September 2026: what it does, where it runs, and what it asks for before it downloads.

Four Free Ones, Measured From Source

808 Bass Module 5 Lite, The Closest To A Free 808 Source

Electronik Sound Lab gives this one away on Gumroad, where the listing tells you to type a zero into the name a fair price field. It is a ROMpler rather than a synth: fifteen layered 808 presets, glide time, ADSR, an LFO, a filter with cutoff, global tune, and chorus and distortion at the end. The maker's own text says the sounds are ready to play in the key of your project. VST, VST3 and AU at 64-bit, Windows 8.1 or later, macOS 10.14 or later. What it leaves out is a route in: the link printed on the three highest ranking roundups points at the maker's old site, which now redirects every product path to its homepage. The catalogue moved and the lists did not.

BD-808-PRO, Commercial Until January 2026

Synsonic Instruments charged for BD-808-PRO until the end of January 2026, then made it free along with two other plugins it used to sell. It is a circuit model of the TR-808 bass drum with the parts an 808 line needs bolted on: compression, overdrive, glide, and velocity mapped to accent, decay, drive and tone, so it plays as a bass synthesizer rather than only as a kick. Windows gets VST2 and VST3, macOS gets VST2, VST3 and AU, all 64-bit. What it leaves out is a plain download: the file arrives as a demo that goes silent every thirty seconds and saves nothing until you enter an activation key, which the maker publishes free on the same page.

SUB, Synthesis Instead Of Samples

Sampleson's SUB is eighteen analog drum sounds and a sub oscillator built by synthesis rather than by sampling hardware, which is why the whole thing is about thirty five megabytes and needs no sampler engine underneath it. VST, AU and a standalone, 64-bit on Windows and macOS, no sequencer. What it leaves out is a current platform line: the product page names macOS Catalina, Big Sur and Monterey and stops, so the newest system it claims shipped in 2021, and it never says Apple Silicon. The download is gated too: the button takes an email address and the link arrives by mail rather than starting a file.

HUM808, The Deepest Synth Here And Windows Only

HUM808 by Callybeat is the most capable synthesizer on this list and the one most likely to be unusable for you. Four oscillators with two hundred and twenty five waveforms, twelve voices, an ADSR per generator, sixteen filter types with modulators, a four band EQ, an analyzer and an oscilloscope, plus distortion, compression, limiting, reverb and delay. All of it freeware. What it leaves out is macOS: the maker's page lists Windows 7, 8.1, 10 and higher and nothing else, so on a Mac it is not a candidate. That page has carried the same 2022 credit line since it went up.

The free 808 plugins, side by side

Every free entry below downloads today and costs nothing in money. What separates them is what each one asks for first, and how recently anyone checked that it still runs. Measured against each maker's own page and listing in September 2026.

Three of the five free entries were built as drum machine parts and reached the 808 job sideways, which is why the column that decides your session is the last one. A plugin whose newest dated signal is four years old is not disqualified, but it is a plugin nobody has tested against your host in a while.

Why These Lists Go Stale Faster Than Most

The word 808 points at two machines and the lists rarely separate them. One is the Roland TR-808 and its bass drum, a short percussive hit. The other is what a trap or drill producer means: that kick tuned to a note and held long enough to carry the bassline, which is a different choice from a plain sub and often another plugin.

The second reason is that this corner of the market moves and the pages do not. Measured in September 2026 against each maker's own page: the top free pick on the first ranked page needs a paid licence for its current version, a plugin two of the ranking pages still call free is priced on the maker's own store, and the download link three top ten pages give for the 808 Bass Module redirects to a homepage with no product pages left on it.

Where PLUNGE Fits

PLUNGE is ours and it is not free, which is why it sits at the bottom of that table rather than the top. Every free option above hands you a sound and leaves the two hard decisions where they were: what note the 808 should be, and how it sits against the kick already in the session.

It starts from a prompt, builds the voice in signal order, and takes a kick loop as an input. Drop that loop in as audio or MIDI and a tuned, ducked pattern comes back out as MIDI or a WAV you drag onto the timeline. Everything below roughly 110 Hz stays mono however wide the top gets, and the chain after the voice is four stages in a fixed order, lofi then motion then comp then clip, each off until you turn it on. If your 808 keeps smearing when it slides, that is a voice problem before it is a plugin problem. The PLUNGE page carries the full specification.

What To Check Before You Download

  • Whether it is still free, because plugins named on today's top ten pages are variously priced now, free only in an old build, or both.
  • Whether the link goes anywhere, since the free 808 named on most of these pages is linked from three of them to a dead path.
  • Whether it names your machine, because a page that stops at macOS Monterey and never says Apple Silicon predates the Mac you own.
  • Whether it is an 808 or a drum machine, since the two share a number and little else once what you need is a bassline.
  • Whether the free download is a demo, because one here plays silence every thirty seconds until you enter a key.
  • Whether it costs an email address, which is a price the word free does not cover.

Prompt An 808, Lock It To The Kick

PLUNGE builds the voice from a prompt, tunes it to your kick loop and keeps the low end mono. Seven day trial, no card, plugins only.

FAQ

Is there a free 808 plugin?

Yes. Measured in September 2026, five download and run without payment: 808 Bass Module 5 Lite, BD-808-PRO, BD-808, SUB and HUM808. Read the platform line before you commit, though. One of the five is Windows only, one arrives as a demo until you enter a free key, and one asks for an email address before it sends the link.

Which free 808 plugin works on an Apple Silicon Mac?

None of the five states an Apple Silicon position on its own page, which is the single biggest gap in this category. Four of them ship an Audio Unit, and macOS will run an Intel build under Rosetta in a host that allows it, but that is a workaround rather than a claim the maker made. If native Apple Silicon matters to your session, test in your own host before you plan around any of them.

Is Sitala still free?

Only an old build. Sitala appears at the top of the highest ranking free 808 list, and its current release, dated July 2026, requires a licence bought from the maker. The free download on that same page is version 1.0.9 from February 2021, and Apple Silicon support arrived with version 2. So the free Sitala and the Sitala described in most roundups are not the same program.

Do free 808 plugins work in FL Studio, Logic or Ableton?

Mostly, with one format catch. FL Studio and Ableton load VST and VST3 on both platforms, so every entry here except the Windows only one is available to them. Logic loads Audio Units only, which rules out anything that ships without an AU: on this list SUB, BD-808, BD-808-PRO and 808 Bass Module 5 Lite all include one, and HUM808 does not exist on macOS at all.

Why do so many free 808 lists include plugins that are not 808s?

Because the number matches and nobody checks. A TR-909 kick, a TR-707 kit, a general drum sampler and a Tube Screamer overdrive pedal all carry a three digit model number, and one of those numbers is 808. The test that sorts them is simple: can it hold a tuned note long enough to be a bassline. A bass drum module that answers MIDI pitch can. A hi hat kit cannot.
