A sub drop is a low tone that starts in the upper bass, falls, and settles on or just under a downbeat. The falling pitch is the whole point. It is a tonal event, so it belongs to the key of the track the way an 808 does, and it lives in the octave your low end already owns. Plenty of elements mark a landing, and the three jobs a transition has to do sorts that out. This is about the part underneath, where a sub drop and an 808 quietly ruin each other.
A drop that falls through a note outside your key reads as a mistake even when it is short, because the ear tracks pitch perfectly well down there. Stereo width below roughly a hundred hertz buys you almost nothing and risks cancellation the moment a system sums to mono. A sub drop is an easy place to lose level without noticing, because you place it once and never solo it again. Collapse it to mono at the source rather than fixing it later on the master.
A sub drop still sounding when the first 808 of the new section arrives turns two notes into one blurred slide. Trim it so the tail dies inside the bar it belongs to. Shorter almost always reads as harder, because what the ear registers is the fall, not the ring that follows it.
Solo it and you will make it too loud every time. Balance it against the kick and the 808 in the bar where it lands, then watch the meter. If the master peak jumps when the drop enters, the drop is spending headroom that the whole section has to pay back.
Land a sub drop on a downbeat that already carries an 808 and both events push the same drivers, in the same octave, at the same instant. The good outcome is that they sum and the peak jumps, so your limiter grabs the entire mix for the length of the note. The bad outcome is that they arrive close in frequency but not in phase, and you get less low end instead of more: a hole exactly where the biggest moment of the track was meant to be.
There are three fixes and they are all arrangement decisions. Delay the first 808 note by a beat so the drop owns the downbeat alone. Shorten the sub drop so it has finished speaking before the bass enters. Or leave the 808 out of that bar entirely and let the drop be the bass note. The third is usually the strongest, for the same reason that the kick and the 808 work as one instrument rather than two.
A crash marks a landing with broadband noise and a long decay through the mids and top. A sub drop marks a landing with weight and almost nothing else. They answer different questions. The crash says something changed. The sub drop says something got heavier. Reaching for both on the same beat is common and usually wrong, because the crash covers the first kick while the sub drop covers the first 808.
Use the sub drop when the top of the arrangement is already busy, when hats and vocals leave no room for another bright element, or when the section you are entering is defined by its low end. Use a crash when the new section opens sparse and needs air moved, or when the low end has to stay completely clear for a bass line that starts on beat one.
